Single Salma is about a self sacrificing 30+ single woman who has dedicated her life for supporting her family. It is obvious from the film’s title that the woman who is born and brought up in Lucknow is not married out of her choice.
There are four film producers Alok Jain, Firuzi Khan, Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi and her brother Saqib Salem who have collaborated with Ajit Andhare. Directed by Nachiket Samant.
The cast of Single Salma comprises of Huma Qureshi as Salma Rizvi, Sunny Singh as Meet Singh Sahni, Shreyas Talpade and Kanwaljit Singh as Salma’s father.
There are two contenders for Salma’s marriage – Shreyas plays as Sikander Khan and Sunny Singh is Meet. To put the story in brief, Sikander approaches Salma with a matrimonial proposition and they almost hit it off. Until Salma has to visit London suddenly where she comes in touch with Meet and falls in love with him.
Now she is in a dilemma whether she is ready for marriage or not. And if she decides to again, the confusion as to whom – the simple and disciplined Sikander or with Sunny Singh. Being in London for quite a while, Salma goes through drastic personality change with visiting pubs and adapting to the Western culture.
One day while in the UK, the skimpily dressed Salma goes to the beach, which for a conservative Muslim girl is a big thing. Unfortunately for her, some rascal from Lucknow gets hold of her picture at the beach and posts it on Facebook which creates huge trouble for Salma when she returns to Lucknow.
Fortunately for her, her Lucknow’s prospective groom Sikander is broad-minded enough not to object of her outgoing behaviour while in the UK, and they go ahead with their marriage preparations.
Meet lands up in Lucknow just before their marriage. This makes the story interesting….
Sunny Singh has performed quite well, Navni Parihar has been given an extra dimension to her character with her dancing, having wine, etc. Veteran actor Kanwaljit Singh needs no comment about his acting prowess, Huma Qureshi is subtle and restrained.
On the whole, Single Salma is worth a watch if you like seeing old traditions blending with modernity.
Ultimately Salma is a winner for the final decision she adopts.
It is above other mediocre films with a subtle message to parents to abstain from interfering with their grown ups as long as they are within the ‘approved conventions’ in relation with modern trends of changing times.
